CHAPTER six

The morning light streamed through the window and across Rosie’s cheek. She brushed at is, as if it were an irritating fly, her entire being was begging for more sleep.

“Is you asweep?” Rosie’s eyes shot open at the sound of Lizzy’s voice. Lizzy was sitting up and gazing at her.

“I’m awake now.” Rosie sat up. From the looks of the sun, it was about an hour later than the usual time she woke. She wondered why Pa wasn’t beating down her door.

In minutes, she was splashing the cold water from a pitcher on her face and wiping Lizzy’s face as well. Thoughts of Brady flashed through her mind as she prepared herself for the day. She had to make a decision about him.

When she and Lizzy entered the kitchen, her Pa was sitting at the table drinking a cup of coffee. He looked up and met her eyes.

“That man is gone.” He announced. She thought he didn’t seem very upset about his own words.

Rosie set Lizzy at the table then turned to face her Pa.

“Pa, I just don’t understand anything about this whole thing. Why was he in our barn? Why didn’t the sheriff take him to town?”

Her Pa shrugged. “I don’t know. The sheriff told me he had his reasons for leaving the man here. If the man got away, then it’s the sheriff’s problem, not mine; I’m only glad he’s gone.” He squinted and looked at her. “Why are you so interested in him?”

Rosie gulped and whispered, “That man… that man was supposed to be my husband.”

She watched as shock crossed the older man’s face. He pushed back in his chair and stood up. “What are you telling me?”

Rosie knew it was time to stand up strong. “I’m telling you, I put an ad in an Eastern newspaper for a mail-order husband, and Brady answered it. He was coming here to marry me. I don’t know why he decided to rob that stagecoach.” Rosie was speaking quietly so Lizzy wouldn’t overhear, but determined not to allow her father to bully her.

“Rosie, step out on the porch. We need to talk.” Her pa turned away and stomped out of the kitchen. She could see by the way he was holding his shoulders; he was angry.

Rosie turned back to Lizzy. “I’ll give you a cup of milk. Then I’m gonna go talk to my Pa. After, I’ll come back and make you some eggs.” She patted the girl on the head.

The girl lifted her face. “Okay, Rosie.”

The child was such a sweetheart. Rosie realized she would have loved to be this child’s mother, if Brady and she had gotten married.

Rosie slipped out to the porch. Her Pa turned; his face reddened with anger.

“Rosie, explain yourself!”

Used to her Pa’s emotions, she wasn’t worried about his anger. It would dissipate quickly. She shrugged. “Pa, there’s no one in Waterhole for me and I didn’t want to wait, hoping someone would come along. I’d heard about a few men in town getting mail order brides, so I thought I’d order a mail order husband.
